You probably know Rietveld as the architect of the world-famous Rietveld Schröder House. Yet he began his career as a furniture maker. By the age of eleven, he was already working in his father’s workshop. It was only after joining De Stijl that he became an internationally renowned architect.

From 1936 onwards, Rietveld lived with his wife, Vrouwgien Hadders, and their children on Vredenburg Square. From the top floor, they looked out over the city. He designed this building, where he lives for twenty years, with Truus Schröder.
The cinema is now a retail property.
Truus Schröder was not only the client and co-designer of the Rietveld Schröder House: she also was Gerrit Rietveld’s (secret) lover for more than forty years. She worked with him and was his artistic conscience. They wrote countless letters to each other.
