As industrialisation increased during the 19th century, more and more people worked longer days with machines in large, poorly ventilated factories. This had major health implications. At the end of the 19th century, workers began to fight for better working conditions. The labour movement and socialist leaders in Utrecht such as Pieter Jelles Troelstra played an important role in this.
