Sogenannt Mütterlich

Breastfeeding time - but mother and child are not holding each other. They look to us as if seeking assistance: the child sad and anxious; the mother somewhat distant and resentful. As the title suggests, this work denounces the persistent norm of the mother. Supposedly maternal indeed: the vulnerability and despair that are just as much part of her self-sacrificing role are generally left out of the clichéd image of the mother. Miriam Cahn rectifies this. [text 2023]

In de schilderijen en tekeningen van Miriam Cahn staan thema’s als geweld, macht en kwetsbaarheid centraal. Onder invloed van feministische en anti-kernenergiebewegingen richt haar werk zich vaak op het menselijk lichaam en de impact van oorlog en trauma op op lichaam en geest. In een directe, confronterende beeldtaal en met vereenvoudigde vormen, verbeeldt ze emotioneel geladen scènes.
