Mutterfreude

Miriam Cahn admires the brutality as well as the beauty of the human condition in life’s major events: birth, learning, emotion, conflict, morality and death. Mutterfreude (Mother's Joy) is about the ambiguous role of the mother. A woman suckles her child; their fuzzy, pink bodies fill the blood-red, womb-like space. The iconic image of mother and child, which traditionally should move the viewer, rather arouses unease here. [text 2023]

Miriam Cahn

In de schilderijen en tekeningen van Miriam Cahn staan thema’s als geweld, macht en kwetsbaarheid centraal. Onder invloed van feministische en anti-kernenergiebewegingen richt haar werk zich vaak op het menselijk lichaam en de impact van oorlog en trauma op op lichaam en geest. In een directe, confronterende beeldtaal en met vereenvoudigde vormen, verbeeldt ze emotioneel geladen scènes.
