The exhibition Eaten by Non-Humans, where this work was first shown, has run largely simultaneously with the exhibition Utrecht, Caravaggio, and Europe . For this film Rafa was inspired by a painting by the Utrecht artist Hendrick ter Brugghen, The Rich Man and the Poor Lazarus (1625) from the collection of the Centraal Museum. In this painting two dogs appear to be licking the wound on the poor man’s leg, cleaning it. Rafa’s new film consists largely of a single, slow, travelling shot that moves parallel to the action. The camera registers a scene and determines the reality we see on the screen. But the camera itself is controlled by reality, both in terms of who is behind it and what is in front of it.
