About the workshop
During this event, you will take part in The Books Happen, artist Henny Overbeek's collaborative project.
In connection with others, you claim your own space and respond to what is already there. A line, a statement, a clipping, or a color you would never have chosen yourself guides your own contribution. Responses build on and overlap one another, pages change direction, and stories emerge that no one could have told alone.
At the start of the workshop, you will receive a booklet in which Overbeek has already made a start with an initial invitation to respond. You can do so using cut-outs, drawings, texts, images or other materials. Every 20 minutes, you pass the book on to the next participant, who then builds on your contribution. At the end of the day, you take home the last booklet you worked on. At home, the story can continue to grow, either on your own or together with others.
About Henny Overbeek
Henny Overbeek is a visual artist from Utrecht and an avid book lover. He has been active in the graffiti scene since the 1980s. He enjoys relinquishing control and making room for chance, encounters and collaboration.
This fascination gave rise to The Books Happen: a long-term project in which artists from the Netherlands and abroad, designers and writers continue working in one another’s artists’ books. These books are inspired by blackbooks from the graffiti scene: personal sketchbooks and scrapbooks that provide a tangible record of work in public spaces that often quickly disappears. Several of these artists’ books are also on display in the exhibition and available to browse. Especially for Graffiti, Henny Overbeek is creating a spatial interpretation of The Books Happen that visitors can continuously respond to. The exhibition also features several of his ballpoint pen drawings.
