About the workshop
Graffiti writers are masters at ‘reading’ a city. They see meaning and beauty in places others simply pass by. Photography plays an important role in this.
Visual artist and photographer Thijs Koelink invites you to see the world through the eyes of graffiti writers. Armed with an analogue camera, you’ll explore the public spaces around the Centraal Museum in search of raw urban details, unexpected contrasts and places where you might want to leave a message of your own.
Inspired by Thijs’ documentary and artistic approach, you will create black-and-white images that can be critical, poetic, humorous or confrontational. Back at the museum, the photographs will be discussed as a group and turned into a personal poster featuring a title, message or tag. A selection of the results will be showcased in a temporary presentation at the museum.
About Thijs Koelink
This workshop is led by Utrecht-based visual artist Thijs Koelink. Drawing on his background in graffiti, he developed a distinctive visual style that brings together street photography, documentary observation and artistic expression. He studied photography at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and interned with renowned photographer Martin Parr in London. In his latest project, Camera Obscuras, he explored the tensions between public space, observation and privacy. This photo series was also published as a zine by Stickit.
About Juan Eringaard
The workshop was developed by Juan Eringaard (1979). Eringaard works across the visual and audiovisual arts as an artist, curator and initiator. Drawing on this multifaceted practice, he is involved in various (street) art projects, including TimeCap, KunstGras and Off the Tracks. As an artist, he has exhibited under the alias MOK-C at venues including the Centraal Museum, OP& and KUUB.
