Leave a Legacy

Would you like to make a lasting difference for the Centraal Museum? By leaving a legacy, you can make an indispensable contribution to our mission, even after your lifetime. Thanks to people like you, who care deeply about culture, our collection will be preserved and remain accessible for the future. This way, you pass on your love of art and culture.

“It is our mission to build a liveable culture together. Through our groundbreaking exhibitions and programmes, we create a bridge between the present and the past. We offer inspiration for a better future so that future generations, too, can experience the richness of culture.”
Bart RuttenArtistic Director

There are several ways to include the Centraal Museum in your will. A notary will be happy to help you clearly set out your wishes, so it is perfectly clear what you want to bequeath and under what conditions. Below, we provide an initial overview of the options.

Legacy

A legacy is a specific provision in the will. A legacy can take the form of a fixed amount, a percentage of the estate, or a specific object, such as a house or a work of art. Increasingly, people opt for a percentage of the estate, so that the legacy remains in proportion to the total value of the estate.

Heir

Another way to donate to the museum is to name the Centraal Museum as (co-)heir in your will, alongside, for example, family members, dear friends, and other charities.

Named Fund

Would you like to support a specific purpose of the Centraal Museum with your legacy? Then you can establish a Named Fund. You decide the objective yourself and how the contributed money may be spent. For example, you might think of educational projects for young children, the restoration of a painting, or the acquisition of artworks. And if you have already set up a Named Fund during your lifetime, you can leave a legacy to your own fund.

Leave a work of art to the museum

In addition to bequeathing an object through a legacy in your will, it is also possible to make use of the remission scheme: a tax‑advantaged arrangement that allows your heirs to offset (part of) the inheritance tax. The inheritance tax is then settled against 120% of the appraised value of the artwork. The artwork becomes the property of the State and is placed on loan with the Centraal Museum. Certain conditions do apply. It is therefore wise to enter into discussions with the Centraal Museum and the State during your lifetime. We are happy to help you with this.

Tax benefit

Leaving a sum of money or a work of art in your will is a way to support the museum in its mission. Thanks to our cultural ANBI status, no inheritance tax has to be paid on a bequest. The full amount therefore benefits the museum.

Get in touch

How you choose to support the Centraal Museum is a very personal decision. Leaving a legacy is one of the options. We would be happy to talk with you and help think through the most appropriate way to do so.
