Willem de Rooij - Valkenburg

Since the early 1990s, Willem de Rooij (1969) has created temporary installations in which he explores the politics of representation through appropriation and collaboration. In 2005, he represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale, and since then his work has been exhibited at leading museums worldwide. His practice is characterized by the reuse and rearrangement of existing images and objects, often informed by in-depth art-historical and cultural research. In this way, he creates new meanings between seemingly disparate visual elements. Recent exhibitions include King Vulture (Akademie der Künste, Vienna) and Pierre Verger in Suriname (Portikus, Frankfurt). Alongside his artistic practice, De Rooij teaches in Frankfurt, Berlin and Amsterdam and lectures internationally.

The exhibition is accompanied by the first comprehensive publication on Dirk Valkenburg’s oeuvre: a catalogue raisonné developed in collaboration with the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History. Edited by Willem de Rooij and Karwan Fatah-Black (Leiden University), a historian specialising in the history of slavery and colonialism, the publication features new essays by international scholars and thinkers from a range of disciplines, including art history, colonialism, ecology, queer studies and postcolonial studies.

Willem de Rooij - Valkenburg is on display at Another Story. For Another Story, we invite artists, designers and collectives to present their own work in relation to the Centraal Museum collection. Another Story is located on the second floor of the former St Agnes Convent.
