Susanne Khalil Yusef: We Want to Live
Yusef's neon design is based on the handwritten words of her close friend Hamza, who lives in Gaza.
In the conversations Yusef—who is also of Palestinian descent; her grandparents fled Jaffa in 1948—has with her friends about the unsafe, violent and hopeless situation in Gaza, they often say, ‘We want to live’. These words have taken on even greater significance over the past year, as so many lives are being destroyed. By adding ‘We want to live’ to our collection, we reflect on the horrific events in Gaza. The light installation reminds us of every person’s right to live.
‘We want to live’ can be visited free of charge in the museum garden during museum opening hours.
