Clay
Maarten Baas (1978) designed this gigantic red chair on the station square. He has created several other objects and pieces of furniture from clay. The chair is part of his Clay series.
Baas makes the Clay works from synthetic clay. He moulds the clay around a metal ‘skeleton’. Just like in humans, the skeleton provides strength. Take a closer look at the chair. Can you see the fingerprints?
There are also Clay cabinets, fans, tables and lamps. All are shaped by hand and made without moulds. Every piece of furniture in the Clay series is unique; no two are alike.
About Maarten Baas
Maarten Baas studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He is known for his rebellious, intellectual and artistic designs. Time, imperfection, humour and the social role of designers play a major part in his work. Centraal Museum Utrecht has been collecting and exhibiting chairs by Maarten Baas for years. Another example is the 'Smoke' Red Blue Chair. Baas burned a red and blue Rietveld chair. In doing so, he reveals the beauty of imperfection while simultaneously challenging the rigid conventions of the design world.
