Annex: Mathias Poledna
In the film installation My Favorite Shop (2024), models walk barefoot down the catwalk to driving techno beats. The work is on view in the Annex and is the most recent work by Austrian artist Mathias Poledna (Vienna, 1956).
For the colors of the silk dresses worn by the models, Poledna drew inspiration from frescoes of the Italian Renaissance. The final model, draped in blood red, carries a dramatic accessory that brings the video to a climax. In Poledna’s thoughtful and refined films, there is always a palpable tension between the images and their cultural and political significance. My Favorite Shop allows you to experience how contemporary phenomena never exist in isolation, but are shaped by collective memories of the past and present.
On display at the Annex
My Favorite Shop is on display in the Annex as part of Gerard van Honthorst – Different from Rembrandt in Every Way. This exhibition space is located in the final room of the former stables of the old Agnieten Convent. In the Annex, we present contemporary art that reflects on the main exhibition.
