An American Favorite

An American Favorite
What does our consumption behaviour say about us? To what extent are we tempted by packaging? By creating
depictions of everyday scenes, the first generation of American Photorealists showed the superficiality of consumer society. Van Boeijen builds on this with her paintings of the contents of people’s shopping baskets in supermarkets in different countries, linking consumer behaviour to nationality and identity. Photography remains a defining element: the paintings’ format echoes that of a smartphone photo. [text 2024]
