The Lovers

Raafat Ballan paints people from the past and present meeting at the city gates. They emerge from the inky background as if in a dream. At the art academy in the Syrian capital Damascus, Ballan learned about European Renaissance painting – the revival of classical antiquity. In addition, the famous Syrian artists Marwan Kassab-Bachi (1934-2016) and Fateh Moudarres (1922-1999) are sources of inspiration.[text 2025]

Raafat Ballan

Raafat Ballan is opgeleid aan de kunstacademie van Damascus, Syrië. In 2015 vestigt hij zich in Utrecht. Inspiratie haalt hij uit herinneringen, nieuws of observaties uit het dagelijks leven. Maar ook geschiedenis, kunstgeschiedenis , verhalen en poëzie zijn voor hem belangrijke bronnen. Hij is niet zozeer geïnteresseerd in letterlijke gebeurtenissen of personen, maar juist in de universele verhalen van menselijkheid; de doorlopende zoektocht naar datgene wat je maakt tot wie je bent.
