Mitchell Messina is attracted to the idea of reproduction as translating something from one context to another. Here, he ‘translated’ the red and blue chair into the white plastic Monobloc. While it’s not that hard to make your own Rietveld chair, producing the plastic version is much more complicated. Applying Rietveld’s colour scheme to the Monobloc means that the logic of sharply demarcated lines and surfaces must suddenly relate to fluid forms. [text 2023]
