Alida Ymele’s portraits pay tribute to women who were forced to migrate to escape economic or political crises.
In the West they performed unseen and undervalued work and eventually returned to their homeland, disillusioned. Because they did not want to be photographed, the artist put herself in their position. The result is a painted selfportrait based on a staged photo of invisible suffering, which is thus given a face. [text 2024]
