Time and transformation form an important theme in Maarten Baas’s design process. His Tree Trunk Chair plays with the idea of a production process that takes two centuries to complete. By having a tree trunk grow up against a robust mould, over time the tree trunk will assume that shape. Two hundred years from now, the mould can be removed and the chair can be harvested. This way, Baas lets the passing of time do the work, creating a chair that he will personally never be able to sit on. [text 2023]
Vanuit zijn studio in Den Bosch verovert Maarten Baas de wereld. Ook Utrecht zien wij zijn werk, en niet alleen in de collectie van het Centraal Museum. Kijk maar eens naar de lichtinstallatie boven de ingang van de bibliotheek aan de Neude. Daarnaast speelde Baas ook met iconische Utrechts erfgoed, zoals de lattenstoel en het buffet van Gerrit Rietveld. Hij verbrandden deze voor zijn serie Smoke.
