Compressed Forests
The website Compressed Forests consists out of manipulated images of forests which have been retrieved live from the internet. Leegte developed an algorithm with which Flickr’s database can be searched to find images of forest landscapes, of which a random one will be selected. The algorithm then applies JPEG compression, which normally is used to manage the size of an image, instead of optimizing the size of the image, the file is compressed to its maximum capacity. What is left is a raw, digital imprint of a forest landscape. Every time the website is visited, new images are generated. The website was bought by the collector’s Pieter and Marieke Sanders in 2018. Pieter Sanders thought this was a real breakthrough in making original works of art widely visible, he thought art must be seen. Go to www.compressedforests.com to see the art work.
