Is it possible to photograph a model without thereby exploiting him or her? That is the issue explored by Jan Hoek in his photography projects. Here we see a photograph of Godlisten, a 23-year-old Maasai man from Tanzania. Western tourists often taken stereotypical photographs of the Maasai, jumping in traditional garb. While actually, the Maasai are increasingly moving to the city and adopting a modern lifestyle. Jan Hoek visited these ‘new’ Maasai in Arusha, engaging them in conversation and portraying them as they wished to be portrayed. Godlisten wanted to be portrayed as Spiderman. He chose this photograph as his favourite.
