The red, white and black of the mask in the photo are the colours of Eshu: the god of crossroads and of indeterminacy in the religion of the Nigerian Yoruba people. The artist, from a family of Yoruba priests, gave his middle name – Adebiyi, to the work. His photographs seem to be a personal exploration of the conflict between his Yoruba upbringing and his homosexuality. Fani-Kayode uses spirituality as a liberating force to break down rigid sexual and cultural boundaries. [text 2023]

Rotimi Fani-Kayode

De Nigeriaanse Rotimi Fani-Kayode, zijn leven grotendeels woonachtig in London, onderzoekt als fotograaf identiteit, spiritualiteit en seksualiteit, gevormd door zijn ervaringen met migratie en het leven in de diaspora. Hij put inspiratie uit Yoruba-tradities en de Westerse kunstgeschiedenis en daagt dominante culturele en religieuze normen uit. Door middel van geënsceneerde, intieme beelden herdefinieert Fani-Kayode het zwarte queer lichaam als een bron van kracht, verlangen en spiritualiteit.
