Nienke Hoogvliet finds new sustainable materials in the sea. Despite all the rubbish in our oceans, there are still many opportunities. For example, fish skins are a waste product from the fishing industry. They are normally thrown away, but they can be tanned to produce beautiful fish leather. Hoogvliet gets her skins from her local fishmonger. She tans them in the traditional manner, a labour-intensive process without the use of chemicals. Fish leather is a strong material with more or less the same qualities as regular leather. To test the possibilities of the material, Hoogvliet designed a stool and a rug.
