Transition Obeach
Dutch and Surinamese culture merge in Remy Jungerman's work. The lines and colours of Transition Obeach may be reminiscent of De Stijl, but Jungerman's inspiration mainly comes from the geometric visual tradition of the Maroons: a community of fugitive, free-spirited enslaved people. This altar refers to the Afro-Surinamese winti religion, but the gin bottles also recall a brutal colonial past. The uncomfortable question arises: who are your ancestors? [text 2023]
