Designer duo Maison the Faux and Hendrickje Schimmel from the collective Tenant of Culture designed a series of objects for Centraal Museum to preserve garments 'for eternity' – a nod to the traditional role of a museum. Taking designs from the Faux Cosmetics Show (2017) as their starting point, they cast a blouse in concrete and a bomber jacket in wax. They also printed a design on transparent silk. Is this 'fashion' or 'art'? [text 2023]
Design duo Maison the Faux (Tessa de Boer en Joris Suk) collaborated with artist Hendrickje Schimmel from Tenant of Culture especially for the Centraal Museum. Inspired by the different themes, they designed a series of objects which would preserve the clothing 'for eternity'. This series includes designs from the Faux Cosmetics show which took place during the New York Fashion Week: including a blouse cast in concrete, a bomber jacket of slowly melting wax and a printed design on transparent silk organza. The experimental character of this installation is in harmony with the style of both Maison the Faux and Tenant of Culture. Their exploratory approach is not easy to place in either the category of 'fashion' or 'art' and therefore summarises the multi-disciplinary age.

Hendrickje Schimmel werkt sinds 2012 onder de naam Tenant of Culture (pachter van cultuur), waarmee ze het modeconsumisme kritisch beschouwt via haar uitgesproken gecompileerde werken. Objecten die vertrouwd voelen en vervreemdend tegelijkertijd. Ze maakt geen draagbare mode, maar bevraagt voortdurend het systeem: hoe bepalen we wat moet worden hersteld, beschermd en bewaard? Een bezoek aan het modedepot van het museum vormde een kantelpunt in haar carrière.
