In the 1930s, Claire Zeisler, an American artist with German-Jewish roots, began a collection of modern art as well as African sculptures, antique textiles from Peru and woven baskets produced by the original peoples of the American continent. She drew on her collection for inspiration and started using traditional weaving techniques. From around 1960, she produced pieces using folded, entangled and knotted fabrics and threads. [text 2026]
