Ship's Dinner Party

Ship's Dinner Party

This scene suggests that life on board a cruise ship is like an earthly paradise: the ideal society in miniature.  At the same time, the staged pleasure has a sardonic edge: the viewer is excluded from this scene of power, wealth and social status. Morley painted from postcards and travel brochures, blown up to monumental  proportions. The saturated Kodak colours, the white frame with the rounded corners and the blurred elements in the image belie its photographic source. In 1970, Morley brought an end to his Photorealist phase: after perfection, it was now time for imperfection. In his view, the shady side of existence required a more  expressionist touch.
