Angus with blue butler
Denim, a check shirt and a baseball cap: this is an unmistakeably American scene. McLean’s work is an ode to ‘the great outdoors’ at a time when no one was painting rural scenes anymore. He based his paintings on black-and-white photographs from trade magazines about horse racing and livestock trading. The poor quality of his source material meant that he had to fill in a lot himself. Yet each painting exudes a deceptive neutrality, as if McLean wants to say: this is America. [Text 2024]
