1931, 8.20pm, a Parisian bar. Not the clichéd image we know from Impressionist paintings of chic people enjoying themselves in grand cafés. Charley Toorop paints workers relaxing with a drink after a long day’s work. This is the Paris she wants to show. At a time of economic recession and the threat of war in Europe, Toorop showed her solidarity with the hard workers of society. [text 2025]

Charley Toorop

Charley Toorop wordt geboren in een artistiek milieu, te midden van het internationale netwerk van schrijvers en kunstenaars van haar vader, de kunstenaar Jan Toorop. Vanaf 1910 treedt ze naar buiten met expressieve landschappen, portretten en stillevens. In de loop van de jaren 1920 wordt haar stijl realistischer en schildert ze indringende portretten en geëngageerde figuurstukken die het leven van boeren en arbeiders vastleggen.
