Around 1900, Dutch cities were working hard on modernisation. In Utrecht this was reflected in hospitals, a public abattoir, water pipes, electricity, cleaning services, schools, train stations, libraries, a theatre and a museum. In addition, the Municipal Health Service played an important role in reducing infectious diseases. The modern lifestyle would also bring new diseases with it, as Isaac Israels unwittingly shows here.
