Vincent van Gogh often wrote to his brother, Theo, about the influence that Japanese art had on him, especially the woodcuts both brothers avidly collected. In Sous-Bois, this
Japonisme meets Impressionism. The bright colours and loose, broad brushstrokes reflect the work of Van Gogh’s French contemporaries. The composition, with its cropped image and lack of a horizon, is typical for Japanese tradition.
