The Hague artists’ association Pulchri Studio organised the first exhibition of Japanese art in the Netherlands in 1886. Several members, including Geertruida van Hettinga Tromp, were influenced by it. Her serene flower still lifes are reminiscent of ukiyo-e woodcuts in composition and colour. Her signature becomes part of the composition – written vertically, Japanese style. [text 2026]
