This exceptional dressing gown conceals unexpected details. It is made from a precious chintz fabric, as revealed by the multicoloured design of asymmetrical floral motifs. The fastening, sleeve buttons and pockets have all been carefully considered. But if you look closely, you will see that this has not been achieved everywhere; for example, the pocket flaps are not quite in the right place. When you open the gown, you are surprised by a second set of front panels, sewn in as a waistcoat. [text 2025]
This exceptional dressing gown, or ‘Japonsche rock’, has a surprising ‘Western’ cut with separate set-in sleeves, as opposed to the more traditional kimono model such as the Japonsche rock on display in this room. The multi-coloured design of asymmetrical, large flowers and plants reveal that the material is costly chintz. While the textile was painted by hand, the positioning of the fastening and the pockets were taken into account. Careful consideration reveals that it is not perfectly matched and the pocket flaps are not in exactly the right place. When the dressing gown is unfastened a second layer is revealed in the form of a stitched in waistcoat. The lining is of red striped linen.- Maker
