One would expect a dress with pink ribbons to belong to a little girl, yet this winter woollen dress with ribbons was worn by a boy. It was usual for both boys and girls to wear dresses in the first years of their lives from the second half of the 16th until the end of the 19th century. This dress was worn by Gerlacus Ribbius Peletier jr. (1887-1969) in 1889, which can be seen on two preserved photographs from that year. 'Gerlachje' poses, with a rather screwed up face, on the carte de visites wearing this dress combined with knee socks and smart shoes. Gerlach junior was the first child and only son of Gerlacus Peletier and Adriana Louise Wijbelingh. Gerlach junior would be the last male member to carry the name of the wealthy Utrecht cigar family. The family has donated other articles of clothing to the Centraal Museum, including a recently acquired dress which is on show in room 4 of the exhibition.
